Nature’s Answer Black Cohosh Root (Cimicifuga racemosa) is a perennial that grows as large as eight feet, and favors shady spots in woods and shrubby areas. You can easily identify it by its creamy white or yellow flower spikes. Black Cohosh is found in Eastern Canada and the US. It grows as far south as Florida, and is also found growing wild in Europe, having been self-seeded from cultivated plants.
The word Cohosh is a Native American word which means “rough,” referring to the plant’s gnarled root structure. The root of the plant has been used extensively by Native Americans for female complaints, which is why one of its nicknames is “squawroot.” The important compounds come from the dark, knotty rhizomes, which are harvested in the fall.
